Luke v Tamas

Page history last edited by Luke 2 yrs ago

Please feel free to chip in with anything below (leaving name if possible!) -  and sorry it is so long, but I ran it through my Mac software - I wasn't making a desperate play for the annotated game prize ;)

that is the only thing I can win, maybe though, at this stage :/

Luke

Luke v Tamas Rd 3 Phones CC

White Luke Barker

Black Tamas Kalman

Result 1-0

1 Nf3 d5

2 g3 Nf6

3 Bg2 Bf5

White to move

4 d3 Nbd7

5 Nbd2 g6

6 Nd4 . . .

Black to move

capitalizing hopefully on the awkward bishop placement

6 . . . Bg7?!

I thought this was a bit risky - sealing the fate of the bishop, even if it does open the g- file.
7 Nxf5 gxf5

White to move

at this point the software I'm annotating with is giving me Nb3, probably because of the f4 push being quite worthwhile for black, otherwise. I thought I would be okay in the game, although I spent some time thinking about it.
8 c4 c6

probably the best followup to c4, and the f5 pawn does have a nice hold for a while on e4.
9 O-O Qb6!

White to move

nicely placed.
10 cxd5 Nxd5?!

White to move

not sure of this, as it seems a bit too early. Take with the pawn allows the rook into the queenside black pressure nd the knight can now be taken off at whites choosing. But it looks good there, thats true!
11 Nc4 . . .

this is a bit obvious but seems fine.
11 . . . Qc5

my software gives Qc5, but this is definitely OK too. As white, here, I am now thinking should I be playing e4 at some point? Knowing little of the game of chess, I defend my b2 pawn :)
12 Rb1?! . . .

Qb3 was better, but I preferred to try and harrass the black queen than be brave with my white one...
12 . . . N7b6

White to move

quite an interesting wee position now, with some possibilities.
13 b4 Qb5

White to move

my software gives Bd2 now for white, but I didnt see so much merit in this at the time. No idea why! I was wanting to take off a knight with Bg2 x Nd5, before it got too trappy - bit of a waste of the bishop before it was necessary, though.
14 Bxd5 Nxd5

15 a4? . . .

Black to move

I didnt see that Bb2 now wd force Bishop exchange and leave the rook on its best square. b2. This pawn push looked playable,as I didnt like the look of Nc3.
15 . . . Qa6

16 Bd2 Bc3?

I didnt think this was so bad at the time, but my software is saying that because of the possible R x b5 a few moves later, attacking the knight, this bishop cannot really come to this square, defended as it is by the knight.
17 Qb3? . . .

Black to move

of course I missed it, thinking I was going to pick up the knight on d5 or at least a pawn on the B-file. I should have played b5!
17 . . . Bxd2

18 b5?! . . .

Black to move

argh - now i am losing according to the computer :( (only very slightly though). N x B was more prudent.
18 . . . cxb5

19 axb5 . . .

I stupidly didnt see that Qh6 defends the bishop, but I was half-right as the N is definitely hanging on d5 :)
19 . . . Qh6

Black has a tiny initiative according to computer.
20 Nxd2 Nb6?!

I thought this was good too at the time - Tamas is blocking the advance of the white pawn. But Rd8 developing is better.
21 Nf3 . . .

I want to keep this on as it is better placed longterm than blacks N. It can help attack f5 too.
21 . . . O-O

White to move

I was relieved by this castling manouevre, as it meant I wasnt about to be attacked down the g-file...not sur eif that was ever on really, though.
22 Qb4?! . . .

not a great idea - contesting the c-file is better.
22 . . . Nd5

23 Qb3 . . .

I was in time trouble and thought this was a good way to fill a move.
23 . . . Qd6

24 e4! . . .

Black to move

a good time to play it...
24 . . . fxe4

25 dxe4 Nb6

26 Rbd1 Qc5

27 Rc1 . . .

we are both near the time control here so it's ok to make shuffle moves.
27 . . . Qd6

28 Rfd1 . . .

black has fared worse here, although I was feeling flustered, to be honest.
28 . . . Qf6

29 e5 Qf5

30 Nd4? . . .

Black to move

Argh! Blundering a pawn spectacularly! Tamas after the game said "this was bad, perhaps it might have been fatal"!
30 . . . Qxe5

31 Qf3 Rab8?

too defensive - Rd8 and pinning the knight attempt is better.
32 Qg4+ Qg7

White to move

33 Qxg7+? . . .

bad, I was going for a cheapo - Qe4 might allow me better chances of getting the pawn back.
33 . . . Kxg7

34 Rc7 e6?

White to move

oops - Kf6 worked.
35 Nxe6+ Kg8

36 Nxf8 Kxf8

37 Ra1 Nd5

White to move

38 Rc5 Ne7

39 Rxa7 Nc8

Blair afterward ssuggested R x N here to win a pawn and give the exchange back.
40 Ra1 . . .

Black to move

paranoid! Ra4 was a bit more flexible, e.g. Rh4 / R g4 / R c4 after.
40 . . . Nd6

41 Rh5 Kg7

42 Rd1 Kg6

43 g4 Ne4

44 Kg2 Nf6

45 Rd6 Re8

I missed f4! here - thought it was bad, as, er... it allowed a check :/
46 h4

I don't have an accurate record of the game here - essentially I ended up exchanging off the pieces with an easily won game, but my flag almost fell before Black resigned.
