Davy   vs   Stephen

It was a foul night.
There was a howling ... there was a wailing ... but we ignored Kevin and started the clocks.

  1. b4

(Stephen usually gets into time trouble - my hope was to make him think – though after 10 moves he was ahead on time)

  1.       e6
  2. a3    Nf6
  3. Bb2   b6
  4. Nf3   Bb7
  5. e3    c5
  6. Bc4

(thought would castle then come up with a plan)

  6.        cxb

(oops)

  1. axb   Bxb4
  2. O-O  (castled, so will start thinking any minute now)

  8.        O-O

(A pawn down, but pretended I had a white version of a Benko gambit. Problem was the centre wasn’t blocked, the king-side bishop wasn’t fianchettoed and black had castled with impunity.)

  9.  Ba3

(developing is over-rated)

  9.        Qe7

  1. c3    BxB
  2. NxB   Rc8
  3. Be2   d6
  4. Nc2   QNd7
  5. QNd4  a6
  6. Qb3   Ne4
  7. Qb2

(a world record – 16 waiting moves in a row …. perhaps Nc2)

  16.       b5

  17. KRc1  d5

  18. Rc2   Nb6

(White’s c & d pawns are a worry to White)

  19. Qc1   Nc5

  20. Rb1   e5

  21. Nb3   NxN

  22. RxN   Qe6

  23. h3    d4

(Action!)

  24. KRb2  dxc

  25.     Rxc3

(thought giving Black united passed pawns was better than dxc giving White an isolated pawn – and wanted to swap a piece or two)

  25.                                 Na4

  26.     RxRch   RxR

  27.     Rc2     Nb6

  28.     Qb1     f5

(after, Stephen said was a weakening move, I felt it relaxed the pressure and opened his King, but now I don’t quite know why)

  29.     Qb2

    29.         Nc4
(not good, I think, fed up with my poor play & trying to force the issue? Perhaps RxR and trying to advance the Queen-side pawns?)
30.      BxN     RxB
31.      RxR     BxN
(Does Black think the passed pawns are worth the sac?  Think they are not advanced enough for me to work it out, so move the Rook)
32.      Rc5     Bd5
33.      Qc3     h6
34.      Qa5     Kh7
35.      Qd8     Ba2
36.      Qc7     e4
37.      Rc6     Qd5
38.      Rxa     b4
39.      Ra7     Qg8
(Think the pressure is off but don't see a win in time avaiable.  Luckily, Stephen has only a minute or two)
40.      Qe5     b3
41.      Qxfch   Kh8
42.      Qe5     Qf8
43.      Rb7
(does White have time to Queen a pawn?)
43.          Qa3
(problem solved)

   44.  Qxg7 mate
